Flora Williams, MD, FACOG, is one of our OB/GYN providers at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center.

“I’ve been practicing medicine for 19 years and have been a part of the Bon Secours family for the last eight-and-a-half years,” Dr. Williams shares.

While she has always been interested in science and majored in biochemistry as an undergraduate student, it was Dr. Williams’ many hospital volunteer experiences that sent her on her current journey.

“I found that I enjoyed working with patients more than working in a lab,” she says. “Over time, I realized that I wanted to be part of a profession which focused specifically on helping and empowering others. Becoming an OB/GYN has allowed me to do this and make a positive impact in the lives of other women. It is truly a gift to be able to help women through some of their happiest and most challenging life events.”

Dr. Williams loves working with women through all phases of their lives. She finds it so rewarding to be able to care for patients from adolescence into adulthood – through their pregnancies and into their post-reproductive years.

“I also enjoy taking care of different generations within the same family,” she adds. “I have been in practice long enough to provide care for young women that I delivered many years earlier. It is truly a gift to have the opportunity to take care of them, their mothers and their grandmothers.”

While there were many setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Williams is happy that it helped grow telehealth options.

“There have been significant improvements in telemedicine and virtual medical care that otherwise would have taken years,” she says.

Over the years, Dr. Williams has come to realize that she could not imagine herself in any other profession.

I am so happy to have the opportunity to empower women and to help them through some of the most challenging times in their lives,” she shares. “My favorite thing about being a physician is the ability to make a positive impact in the lives of others.”

Like many of us, Dr. Williams finds strength and support from her mentors as well as colleagues.

“My colleagues are kind and respectful women and men who every day do their best to serve their community,” she shares. “Also, all of my partners at St. Francis – Dr. Hicks, Dr. Howell, Dr. Mrava, Dr. Pringle and Dr. Wiles – have all been exceptional mentors since I joined Richmond OB/GYN almost 15 years ago.”

And last but not least, what does National Doctors’ Day mean to Dr. Williams?

It is a day to voice appreciation for all the providers that have made a positive impact in their patients’ lives.”
