At the end of a nurse’s shift, caring for patients and people does not stop – it continues. This is especially true for two Bon Secours Southampton Medical Center nurses: Desiree Gunn, RN (pictured above, left), charge nurse in perioperative services, and Carol Asbell, RN (pictured above, right), acute care director.
After a very busy day, Desiree was driving home from work when she noticed a white car stopped on the side of the road. She drove past and glanced at the driver’s seat. She noticed a man in the car slumped over. Desiree immediately turned her car around and dialed 911.
“Upon arriving at the car, I was pleased to see he was alert and moving,” Desiree recalls.
Carol was driving home after her shift as well when she saw fellow nurse Desiree running toward a parked car on the side of the road. She, too, stopped to help. The nurses both started talking to the man. He explained that he had just left an outpatient appointment where he had small procedure but was having difficulty seeing. He indicated he was driving back to Murfreesboro, N.C.
Both Desiree and Carol knew that the man should not be driving anywhere.
“I was able to help with the patient and assist Desiree in convincing him not to drive home,” Carol shares.
Desiree adds, “I called a friend for him while someone helped move his vehicle away from the road.”
The nurses then drove the patient back to his doctor’s office and explained to the staff what had happened. The man was very appreciative to Desiree and Carol for being good Samaritans and answering the call to help while off duty.
