This fall, Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital (RGH) received an exciting boost to their “Answering the Call” Capital Campaign, a campaign funding the expansion and renovation of this rural Northern Neck critical access hospital. With the generous donations of two community banks, Blue Ridge Bank and Chesapeake Bank, we are now $200,000 closer to our $15 million goal!

These donations allow our ministry to further our commitment to improving access to quality, compassionate health care for residents in the Northern Neck.

“We are so grateful to have not only the support of these community banks, but these generous donations that will help us further our mission and better meet the health care needs of our community,” Alan Bailey, vice president administrator at RGH, shares. “We are very excited about what’s to come for our hospital.”

The capital campaign that Blue Ridge Bank and Chesapeake Bank are supporting encompasses an expansion and renovation of more than 35,000 square feet, which will most notably include a major overhaul of the emergency department. With this renovation, Rappahannock General Hospital’s emergency department will become the hospital’s main entrance, ensuring those needing care will be able to quickly connect with help and answers upon entering the facility.

The emergency department will also transform from an eight-bed, semi-private unit to a 10-bed unit with private rooms. The new construction will also include a new kitchen and dining area, as well as a main entrance and emergency entrance canopy.

“Hospitals in rural markets are integral to the health and well-being of residents and to the community’s overall economic viability,” Brian K. Plum, president and CEO of Blue Ridge Bank, shares. “Rappahannock General is an essential service provider in the Northern Neck community, and we are proud to be ‘answering the call’ in support of our teammates, clients and community members.”

A 2014 report revealed Lancaster County and Northumberland County were the fifth and eighth most elderly populated counties in the U.S., respectively.

“A new emergency department will increase access to quality health care for all residents of this predominately rural region and will have a profound impact on our vulnerable elderly populations,” Jeffrey Szyperski, chairman, president and CEO of Chesapeake Bank and honorary co-chair of the RGH campaign, says. “I am proud that Blue Ridge Bank joined us in making a significant commitment to our community hospital.”

Earlier this year, our ministry announced a $15 million philanthropic goal to provide the funding needed to complete this project. The campaign for Rappahannock General Hospital has raised $13.7 million toward its $15 million goal thanks to these and various other community donations, as well as two generous bequests from the estates of Marvin Camp and Faye Hannum.

“It’s because of the support from our community and community partners that we are able to further extend our compassionate ministry in the Northern Neck community,” Alan Bailey adds.
