Preparing for childbirth involves more than just choosing a hospital and a birthing plan. One crucial aspect is packing your hospital bag with everything you might need during your stay.

Whether you’re a first-time parent or an experienced one, having a well-prepared hospital bag can make your birthing experience more comfortable and stress-free.

Here’s our guide on what to pack in your hospital bag for childbirth.

First, be sure to bring your important documents.

This includes your ID, health insurance card or information along with any necessary hospital paperwork. Additionally, if you’ve typed out a birth plan, bring a copy of that as well.

Second, all your new baby essentials.

After all, the baby is why you are at the hospital in the first place! Newborn clothing items are a must, especially if you have a special first outfit picked out. Swaddle blankets, diapers and wipes are important too. Also, most hospitals will have a lot of these supplies on hand as well.

Third, you’ll want to make sure you have any labor and delivery as well as postpartum care items.

Depending on your birth plan, you might want to bring some items from home to help you during labor and delivery. These could be a birthing ball, hot or cold packs and massage oil or lotion. Just make sure to check with your health care provider or hospital about these items ahead of time.

As for postpartum care, you might want to bring the following items:

  • Nursing bras and tops
  • Comfortable recovery underwear
  • breast pads
  • Witch hazel pads
  • Perineal spray
  • Sanitary pads

And just like your new baby’s essential supplies, your hospital should have most of these items for recovering mothers, too.

Fourth, comfortable clothing is a must.

A few pairs of loose and comfortable pajamas or nightgowns are important, along with slippers or comfortable socks. A cozy robe is a nice addition as well.

Fifth, your toiletries.

Since you will most likely be in the hospital for at least a couple of days, you’ll want to make sure you have the items you need to freshen up.

Good items to bring include:

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Body wash and a loofa
  • Lip balm and moisturizer
  • Glasses and/or contact lenses
  • Hair ties or hair clips

Sixth, entertainment and electronics.

You’ll want these items for many reasons – to stay in touch with loved ones, to capture precious moments, to help distract during labor and just to kill some time.

Entertainment and electronic items to consider bringing include:

  • Books, magazines or e-reader
  • Music playlist and headphones
  • Tablet or laptop for watching movies or shows
  • Camera or smartphone

Just make sure to bring chargers for all your devices!

And seventh, snacks and drinks.

While there will be meal options available at the hospital, you’ll want to bring some healthy snacks to keep your energy up during your stay. A reusable water bottle is also a good idea as well as maybe even some electrolyte drinks for extra hydration.

When should I pack my hospital bag?

Remember to pack your bag well in advance of your due date to avoid any last-minute stress. Again, consider the length of your hospital stay and pack accordingly. Also, check with your health care provider or hospital ahead of time for any specific items they recommend.

Taking the time to plan and pack your hospital bag for childbirth ensures you have everything you need for this momentous occasion! By including essential items tailored to your preferences and needs, you can focus on the special moment of welcoming your newborn into the world.
