As we continue to recognize and raise awareness about Heart Month this February, here’s a look at a new, minimally invasive procedure available at Bon Secours for patients suffering from carotid artery disease.

Carotid artery disease is the buildup of fatty deposits or plaque in the arteries that deliver blood to the brain and head. Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR), is an innovative treatment that is performed through a small incision above the collarbone. During the procedure, a sheath delivers a stent into the blocked artery and blood flow is temporarily reversed to protect the brain.

When compared to more traditional treatment options for carotid artery disease, the benefits of the TCAR procedure include reduced risk of stroke, minimal incisions and scarring, shortened procedure time as well as reduced recovery time.

The TCAR procedure is currently available at Bon Secours – Memorial Regional Medical Center, Bon Secours – St. Mary’s Hospital, and Bon Secours – Maryview Medical Center. This procedure is also already changing the lives of our patients. Check out these two recent success stories.

Rufus in Richmond, VA

Rufus, a 92-year-old resident of Mechanicsville, Virginia, was one of the first patients to undergo the TCAR procedure at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center. When he suffered a miniature stroke as the result of an unknown artery blockage, the doctors found that 75 percent of his right carotid artery was blocked. Under the care of Andrew Tierney, MD, a vascular surgeon with Bon Secours Vascular Surgery Associates, the TCAR procedure was recommended and later performed. The surgery went so well, in fact, that Rufus was able to be discharged from the hospital the very next day and get back to living his life.

Dorothy in Hampton Roads, VA

Dorothy Heron, a resident of Suffolk, Virginia, was diagnosed with carotid artery disease and had been suffering with her prognosis for a while. While seeking treatment, Dorothy found she was eligible for TCAR. Under the care of Chad McKenzie, DO, with Bon Secours Vein and Vascular Specialists, she became the second patient in the area to undergo the procedure at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. Fortunately, her recovery process only lasted a few days and she was able to return to her normal activities in no time.

If you are suffering from carotid artery disease, talk to your doctor. The TCAR procedure may be a treatment option that’s right for you.
