We are happy to welcome Kelly San Miguel, MD, to our Greenville team! With her expertise and commitment to patient-centered care, Dr. San Miguel is here to support women on their health care journey.
At the age of 15, Dr. San Miguel’s mother was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. This experience, though challenging, sparked a deep interest in medicine and the desire to make a difference in women’s health.
“I grew years beyond my age and learned how to cope despite the difficult situation that we all faced,” Dr. San Miguel recalls. “The truth is that life begins at the end of your comfort zone. Even though I wasn’t aware at the time that medicine was going to become my life, her illness changed everything.”
Dr. San Miguel’s journey to becoming a health care provider has been driven by her passion for women’s health. Prior to attending medical school, she volunteered in a hospital in rural Malawi, where she witnessed the challenges faced by women in accessing basic health care. One particular patient’s story left a lasting impact on her, reinforcing her dedication to making a difference.
“These early experiences in Africa became stepping stones for my medical career and even led me to pursue a master’s in public health,” she shares.
Dr. San Miguel’s experience and personal calling have guided her toward specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. She firmly believes that she was destined to be an OB/GYN since the age of 15, and her experiences only solidified her passion in this field.
As a health care provider, Dr. San Miguel takes great joy in serving and educating her patients, particularly teenage patients.
“From the moment I began my career in medicine, I have always wanted to be a strong female role model, like my mother and other strong women I have met in my life,” she says. “Part of being a physician is not only educating patients on their diagnosis and best treatment options but also being an example. I am thankful to have found a specialty that fuels my passion for the care of women in every stage of their lives.”
With a focus on high-risk obstetrics, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and the treatment of abnormal bleeding, Dr. San Miguel strives to provide personalized and up-to-date care to each of her patients. She believes in a collaborative approach, valuing the partnership between provider and patient. Overall, her goal is to empower her patients to actively participate in their health care journey, ensuring that they feel heard, supported and involved in the decision-making process.
