Last month, our Richmond leadership team hosted its inaugural celebration event where team members gathered to celebrate the many successes of 2021. Prior to the ceremony, Richmond’s care sites nominated fellow team members in three categories: physician of the year, leader of the year and associate of the year.
We are pleased to announce that Benny Cook was named 2021 Associate of the Year for his steadfast dedication to meeting the most urgent needs of our health system and community.
Benny serves as the environmental services (EVS) supervisor for Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital. Benny himself defines our ministry’s mission of bringing “good help to those in need.” He holds daily team meetings with all employees. The key element of his message each week is the reinforcement of our mission statement and the importance of teamwork.
In a recent team meeting, Benny stressed why our mission is so important and why our mission statement is the building blocks to providing top-level care to the members of our community.
“We have servant’s hearts. We are givers, not takers; we are building trust in the ministry by delivering value and demonstrating genuine empathy in every exchange with our patients,” Benny shares.
He also spotlights team members each week who display one or more of our Bon Secours values.
Since becoming the EVS supervisor, Benny has significantly improved turnover times, therefore enabling the team to meet daily goals. The practices that he has brought to the team have been great contributions to overall success. Benny is accessible and encourages all employees to talk openly and freely with him. He also encourages them to challenge him if he is not upholding the ministry’s mission.
Benny is a self-confident and strong leader, yet in an unassuming way. He will tell you that he works with the employees, never that they work for him. Benny and the EVS team have extraordinarily low employee turnover because of the kind environment he has built. Employees love to work for and with him because of what is most important to them; to serve, be recognized and work in a rewarding environment with an incredible leader — a leader like Benny!
Congratulations, Benny, and thank you for being a part of our ministry.
