When it comes to radiation therapy, precise treatment planning matters.

Bon Secours St. Francis Cancer Center in our Greenville market now offers a new CT simulation technology to help our radiation oncology team create highly personalized treatment plans while limiting radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

If you are or a loved one are dealing with a cancer diagnosis, make an appointment with our cancer care and oncology team to better understand your treatment options.

What is CT simulation for radiation therapy?

CT simulation is an important step that happens before radiation treatment begins. Detailed images give the radiation oncology team a precise view of a patient’s anatomy, helping them identify the treatment area, account for movement in the body and develop an individualized treatment plan.

The new system provides high-resolution imaging, faster scans and advanced motion-management capabilities. These features can be especially helpful when planning treatment for tumors that move as a patient breathes.

The system can also accommodate a variety of patient positions and treatment setups, supporting both patient comfort and clinical flexibility.

“Every radiation treatment begins with a precise understanding of the patient’s anatomy,” says Jennifer Vogel, MD, medical director of radiation oncology at Bon Secours St. Francis Cancer Center. “This technology strengthens our ability to evaluate complex treatment areas and create highly individualized plans for our patients.”

Supporting advanced radiation treatments

Enhanced imaging using this new CT technology also supports highly targeted stereotactic radiation therapies.

These treatments deliver precise doses of radiation to a treatment area while limiting the impact on nearby healthy tissue. They may be used to treat certain tumors, including those in the brain, spine and lung.

For patients in our Greenville market and across the Upstate, adding this technology also expands access to advanced radiation oncology services close to home. St. Francis Cancer Center brings radiation treatment, chemotherapy, laboratory services and physician offices together in one outpatient location.

“This is an investment in our patients, our physicians and the future of cancer care in Greenville,” says Andrew Honeychuck, director of oncology at Bon Secours. “It allows us to pair advanced imaging with two highly capable treatment platforms and provide more patients with sophisticated radiation care close to home.”
