At Bon Secours, we live our mission to bring good help to those in need every day, not only through how we deliver care, but through the leaders we entrust to guide our future.

At Bon Secours – Southside Medical Center, that mission is embodied by four accomplished physician leaders who are shaping the future of emergency medicine, critical care, trauma services and women’s health. Each brings deep clinical experience and a shared commitment to the well-being of patients in Petersburg and Tri-Cities.

Their leadership represents not just individual excellence, but a broader investment in delivering quality, compassionate care where it’s needed most.

Critical Care, Close to Home
Kate Klein, MD, Medical Director of Intensivist Services

Bon Secours Southside Medical Center recently expanded its intensive care offerings with the introduction of a dedicated intensivist program: a critical advancement for patients facing severe or complex illness. At the helm is Kate Klein, MD, (pictured above, far right) a seasoned cardiothoracic surgeon whose approach to critical care blends expert knowledge with compassionate presence.

“Being able to offer intensive, round-the-clock care locally is a major win for patients and their families,” says Dr. Klein. “They don’t have to leave their community to receive advanced, life-sustaining treatment.”

Dr. Klein’s leadership ensures patients in the ICU have access to specialized care at all hours, improving outcomes and easing the burden on loved ones during difficult times.

A Commitment to Women and Families
Daphne Bazile, MD, Medical Director of OBGYN Services

Maternal health is both a personal and professional calling for Daphne Bazile, MD, (pictured above, far left) who leads Ob/Gyn care at Southside Medical Center and across the Richmond market. With her recent appointment to the Governor’s Cabinet for Maternal Health, Dr. Bazile brings valuable insight into how systems can better support women throughout pregnancy, delivery, and beyond.

From expanding access to prenatal services to addressing disparities in outcomes, Dr. Bazile’s leadership reflects a mission-centered focus on whole-person care and community well-being.

Building Trauma Services for a Stronger Tomorrow
Chelsea Hutchinson, MD, Medical Director of Trauma Services

New to Southside Medical Center is Chelsea Hutchinson, MD, (pictured above, middle left) who brings high-level experience from a Level I trauma center to her new role overseeing trauma care at the hospital. Her mission is clear: to strengthen the hospital’s trauma readiness and ensure swift, specialized care for patients experiencing serious injuries.

“The patients in our community deserve access to timely, expert trauma care, without having to leave their home,” says Dr. Hutchinson. “We’re building a program that’s designed to serve people when every second matters.”

Her leadership marks an important step in the hospital’s ongoing efforts to enhance emergency preparedness and save lives when minutes count.

Emergency Services Rooted in Readiness
Dr. Joran Sequeira, Medical Director of Emergency Medicine

As Medical Director of the Emergency Department, Joran Sequeira, MD, (pictured above, middle right) leads a team that serves as the front line of care for Southside. From stabilizing traumatic injuries to responding to time-sensitive conditions, the ED must be prepared for anything and Dr. Sequeira brings both the clinical focus and calm leadership needed to navigate high-stakes decisions.

Under her guidance, Southside’s emergency services continue to evolve to meet the community’s growing and complex needs.

As president of Bon Secours Southside Medical Center, Brenda Woodcock is deeply committed to empowering clinical leaders who embody the ministry’s mission. “As a fellow female leader, I’m especially proud to work alongside these incredible physicians who are breaking barriers. They are not only delivering quality, compassionate care, they are fearless advocates for our community. Their leadership reflects the very heart of our ministry, and it’s an honor to support and serve alongside them.”
