Cold Cap Therapy Helps Cancer Patients Hold on to Their Hair

For individuals undergoing cancer treatment, chemotherapy-induced hair loss can be emotionally devastating, leading to feelings of vulnerability and loss.

However, last month, our Richmond market proudly celebrated five years of providing cold cap therapy at no cost to help patients minimize hair loss during chemotherapy.

How does cold cap therapy work?

The Paxman Scalp Cooling System, used in cold cap therapy, works by reducing scalp temperature to between 64 and 71 degrees Fahrenheit. The cooling effect, achieved by a cap connected to a specialized machine, starts before chemotherapy and continues during and after treatment.

By lowering scalp temperature, blood flow to the hair follicles decreases, allowing less chemotherapy medication to reach them, which helps reduce hair loss. Each therapy session takes about an hour before and after chemotherapy.

“Cold cap therapy gives patients a choice, offering control over a distressing side effect,” William Irvin Jr., MD, medical director of oncology in our Richmond market, explains. “Hair loss often occurs suddenly, which can be shocking and upsetting. Minimizing hair loss allows patients to maintain a sense of self and normalcy.”

Cold cap therapy is FDA-approved to help lessen hair loss in individuals with all types of cancer except scalp cancer. Dr. Irvin also emphasizes that while cold cap therapy isn’t perfect, patients will still experience less hair loss compared to chemotherapy without the therapy. Additionally, studies have shown that hair regrowth is faster in patients who use cold cap therapy.

Does insurance cover cold caps therapy?

Unfortunately, insurance does not cover cold cap therapy. However, our ministry proudly provides this technology at no cost through our Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation, thanks to generous donations.

“Covering the cost helps us provide compassionate, comprehensive care, using the latest technology and advanced treatment protocols,” Dr. Irvin says. “It gives patients a sense of control in an otherwise uncontrollable situation.”
