The arrival of a newborn is an occasion that deserves the utmost care and attention.

And at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, we’ve recently made innovative improvements to our mother-infant unit that truly elevate the birthing experience.

This investment in new families includes modern, spacious and comfortable rooms for expectant mothers. The rooms are meticulously designed to create a soothing and homey atmosphere, promoting relaxation and a sense of security. Families have space to welcome their new baby as well as gain the education and support they deserve.

Aimee Adams, our nurse director of the mother-infant unit and NICU, shares that it’s the unwavering commitment to our Mission and Values as well as our exceptional track record in delivering high-quality outcomes for maternal and newborn care that led the renovation.

“From the moment a mother enters our care to the nurturing of newborns in those critical early moments of life, our Mission embodies the essence of compassionate health care, and our Values guide every aspect of our work,” Aimee adds.

The unit includes 24 spacious beds with 12 labor suites, four antepartum rooms and 10 NICU beds. Supporting equipment for natural childbirth includes nitrous oxide, a cub chair, rebozos, yoga mats and more to provide personalized support throughout the birthing experience.

The mother-infant unit’s exceptional record of outcomes flow from our caregivers.

We at St. Francis employ a team of highly trained and compassionate health care professionals, including obstetricians, nurses, midwives and support staff dedicated to providing the highest standard of care to ensure health and well-being.

Amy Ransom, our nurse director of antepartum, labor and delivery and lactation, shares that ensuring a woman’s comfort during childbirth is essential for her overall health and well-being and is now more supported than ever with the updates.

“Reducing pain and stress can help prevent complications and promote a faster recovery,” Amy further explains. “Because childbirth can be a stressful and anxiety-inducing experience for many women, managing discomfort and pain can help alleviate this anxiety, which in turn can have positive effects on both the mother and the baby.”

She continues, “a comfortable and less painful birth experience can contribute to a more positive memory of childbirth. This can have long-term psychological benefits, potentially reducing the risk of postpartum depression or trauma. Overall, there’s a profound sense of purpose that comes with helping to facilitate the miracle of childbirth. It’s a privilege to be there for families during one of their most precious moments.”
