“We have so many great options and job opportunities for nurses,” shares Susan Wilkins, clinical associate professor and pre-licensure program chair at Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing, shares. “I love watching our students accomplish their dreams of becoming nurses and helping to instill a passion for nursing in them.”
Susan has been with our ministry since 2004.
“I started in the intensive care unit at Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital and was recruited to Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing in 2006,” she explains. “And I’ve been there ever since.”
Being a nurse and nurse educator is what Susan believes she has been called to do.
“I pray to do God’s will and seek his guidance every day, so all credit belongs to Him,” she shares. “I was proud when I was named eight times by students in a graduate survey as ‘the person in the nursing program who contributed the most to their success.’”
Susan is also very passionate about her career in nursing.
“Nursing goes beyond the technical skills and knowledge that are necessary to manage health,” she says. “It is about connecting with, nurturing and helping people.”
The Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing prepares future generations of nurses who feel called to the profession. In an industry facing a critical shortage of professionals, Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing is adapting to a changing medical landscape by training nurses to care for their patients in the context of their communities.
Susan feels that specifically the global outreach initiatives at Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing have a significant, positive impact on students.
“These experiences open students’ eyes to the challenges people face in our community and around the globe,” Susan explains. “These experiences lead students to want to continue to serve vulnerable populations after graduation.”
She adds, “At Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing, we provide the best nursing education in the area. Students get lots of individual attention and clinical practice. We offer so many support services and resources. In my opinion, nursing is the best profession. I have never regretted my decision to become a nurse.”
