This month, we were proud to announce the groundbreaking on a renovation and expansion project at Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital. For 44 years, Rappahannock General Hospital, located in Kilmarnock, VA, has supported the state’s Northern Neck region. This renovation and expansion, totaling more than 35,000 square feet, will increase the overall patient experience for those seeking care at this rural, critical access hospital. Construction is expected to be completed by late 2022.
The project includes a 910 square foot expansion along with the renovation of 34,159 square feet of existing space. With this renovation, the emergency department will become the hospital’s main entrance. This ensures that those needing care will be able to quickly connect with help and answers upon entering the facility.
The new construction will include a dining area as well as a main entrance and emergency entrance canopies. The renovation of existing space will include a new kitchen, main entrance and lobby and an expanded registration check-in area.
Most notably, this project includes a major overhaul of the emergency department, bringing it from an 8-bed semi-private unit to a 10-bed unit with private rooms. When treating patients in the emergency department, privacy is key. A patient might need to be isolated while experiencing a mental health crisis, or they might need to be isolated to rule out an infectious disease like COVID-19. Having private rooms within the unit will help protect and preserve the well-being of not only our patients, but our staff and the community as a whole.
“Bon Secours remains committed to serving the health care needs of the residents of the Northern Neck, and we are excited to celebrate this exciting milestone,” says Alan Bailey, vice president administrator at the hospital. “This renovation and expansion will allow for an overall improved experience for every patient, visitor, staff and community member who walks through our doors, and we can’t wait to get started.”
In order to fund the renovation and expansion, Bon Secours has announced a $15 million philanthropic goal to provide the funding needed to complete the project. Named the “Campaign for Rappahannock General Hospital,” it is already at more than 75% toward its goal thanks to two generous bequests from the estates of Marvin Camp and Faye Hannum.
“Our community understands the importance of this hospital to this region’s medical and economic health,” says Jimmie Carter, a former Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital board member. “I am proud of the significant support that has been given by Mr. Camp and Mrs. Hannum who both wanted to be a part of something transformational for this community.”
The project includes a 910 square foot expansion, and the renovation of 34,159 square feet of existing space. With this renovation, the emergency department will become the hospital’s main entrance, ensuring that those needing care will be able to quickly connect with help and answers upon entering the facility. The new construction will include a dining area as well as a main entrance and emergency entrance canopies, and, in addition to an expanded emergency department, the remaining renovation of existing space will include a new kitchen, main entrance and lobby and an expanded registration check-in area. Construction is expected to be complete in Q4 of 2022.
